Great People Lead By A Great Instructor!

What a magnificent weekend! Guro Herald Casana of Pekiti Tirsia Kali Alberta has pulled an amazing event. On May 16 and 17 people from different walks of life and far away places met in Edmonton to train with the legendary Tuhon Philip Gelinas.

Tuhon Philip AKA Sled Dog has been practicing martial arts for many many years. He has a wealth of knowledge that is beyond most people’s comprehension. Especially my comprehension. It goes to show how you can always keep learning.

Tuhon was very welcoming and personable. He made everyone feel like they’ve met before. It was like meeting an old friend that you haven’t seen in a long time and pick up where you left of. I hope he Tuhon felt the same about us.

It was amazing to see people who were from different Filipino Martial Arts styles. Sikaran, Rutano Estokada, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, CYC, McLeod Progressive Arnis, Barako Batangueno, and I apologize if I had missed some schools. It was fantastic to see people from the MMA community and other arts.

During the class, Tuhon Phil showed us techniques and he went around with other guros to make sure we were getting the right motions. Some were quite easy to do however there were others that required more practice. This is why we go to seminars, to learn new things and expand our comfort zone. This reminded me of a quote that I heard from “Professionals don’t train until they it right, they train until until they can’t get it wrong.” This means that professionals keep training beyond their comfort zone. They become skilled more than your average practitioner. Tuhon Phil is a professional.

This experience is hard to put into words. I hope the pictures can do a better job. The first day was full of fun and exercises. People were smiling, laughing and having a great time while training. Now I know why Tuhon Philip is in great demand.

A Pekiti Tirsia Kali Scout Badge? Why not?

We live in a small town in Southern Alberta. With a small town, sometimes finding things to do gets hard. Especially for the youth. With great encouragement from Kuya Herald of Pekiti Tirsia Kali Society of Alberta, I decided to start a training group in Magrath. I was not sure how Filipino Martial Arts will be received in this small town. After all there’s already another style in existence here.

Alas, I made an online announcement. To make a long story short, some people took the two trial classes and never came back. Those that came back become dedicated. I have also made my services available to the local boy scout group.

Two of the scouts are my students. They have made a lot of progress from day one. I hope they keep training and keep the fire burning. I can see their skills get better and their coordination smoother. One of them has lost a couple of pounds, too!

One of the adult students build us the tire training dummy. It’s great having this tool. It provided a rotating station among the boys. It’s not easy having boys with different attention spans.

The scout leaders where there to help supervise. Their feedback was very positive and encouraging. It would be amazing to have a Pekiti Tirsia Kali badge!
